A fire destroyed a building in the township early Tuesday morning.

NORTH BRUNSWICK -- Six people jumped out of a second-story window early Tuesday morning, narrowly escaping a blaze that destroyed a building on Georges Road, according to officials.

The fire began around 1 a.m. in an apartment complex next to a barbershop. Firefighters brought the blaze under control in about an hour, according to Capt. Brian Hoiberg, of the North Brunswick Police Department.

Three other adjacent buildings were also damaged.

A family of four adults and a child were among those who jumped from the window. All were taken to a hospital for minor injuries, according to Hoiberg.

At least one of the six people who escaped suffered two broken ankles, he said.

Hoiberg commended firefighters for doing "an outstanding job" containing the fire and preventing it from spreading.

"It could have been much worse," he said.

The building was gutted, he noted.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
