An autopsy report by the Union County Medical Examiner's office showed no signs of trauma, police said.

PLAINFIELD -- A 49-year-old Pennsylvania man was found dead in his jail cell in Plainfield on Friday after he was arrested and charged with heroin possession, police said.

South Plainfield police took the man, of Easton, Pa., into custody Friday morning and transferred him to Plainfield Police on outstanding traffic warrants, Police Director Carl Riley said.

The man, whose name was not released, was found unresponsive in his jail cell later that day, Riley said.

"Attempts to revive him were unfortunately unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter," Riley said.

An autopsy performed by the Union County Medical Examiner's Office showed no signs of trauma, Riley said. He said the final autopsy report is not yet complete.

A person who answered the phone at the medical examiner's office Tuesday morning said he could not confirm any information about the autopsy.

The Union County Prosecutor's Office, which is investigating the inmate's death, declined to release additional information.
