Ahmed El Soury, 44, of South Brunswick, pleaded guilty in federal court on Tuesday.

NEWARK -- A New Jersey doctor who had a practice in Staten Island admitted to taking more than $66,000 in bribes in a wide-ranging scheme involving a Parsippany-based lab, the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a statement.

Ahmed El Soury, 44, of South Brunswick, pleaded guilty in federal court on Tuesday. He was indicted on charges of taking kickbacks in December.

El Soury admitted to taking bribes for referring patients to Biodiagnostic Laboratory Services between March 2011 and April 2013. His referrals generated about $650,000 in business for the lab, authorities said.

He will be sentenced in July and could face up to five years in prison with a $250,000 fine.

Three more guilty pleas in lab payoff scheme

BLS received more than $100 million from Medicare and other insurance companies because of the scheme, authorities said.

A total of 44 convictions have resulted from the investigation, including 30 doctors, and more than $12 million has been recovered through forfeiture.

Four other doctors were indicted in connection with the scheme. BLS, which no longer operates, pleaded guilty and forfeited all its assets.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said it believed this was the largest number of medical professionals ever prosecuted for bribery
