The woman, who jumped from the car after being wounded, was airlifted to Robert Wood Johnson hospital
PERTH AMBOY -- A man has been arrested in the stabbing of a woman who jumped from his moving vehicle after being wounded.
Julio Betances, 51, of Fords, has been charged with attempted murder for allegedly stabbing the woman last week, according to a statement from police.
Betances had been driving in the city last Tuesday with the woman as his passenger. At about 6:15 p.m., after being stabbed, the woman jumped from the moving vehicle -- a black 2007 Pontiac Torrent SUV -- and onto Donald Avenue, the statement said.
Police responded to the scene and gave the woman first aid until EMS personnel arrived, according to authorities. She was then airlifted to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.
A knife was later found by police near where the woman had jumped, according to the statement.
Authorities initiated a search for Betances after he fled the scene. They issued a warrant for his arrest.
At around 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, police arrested Betances after he crashed his vehicle in Edison, according to police.
He was taken into custody and is currently being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Facility in North Brunswick while he awaits a bail hearing, officials said.
