Police are investigating an aggravated assault in New Brunswick early Sunday.

NEW BRUNSWICK -- A suspect "wielding a sharp object" assaulted a man in the  city early Sunday morning, police say.

The man, who is not affiliated with Rutgers University, told authorities that he was assaulted by an unidentified man at around 2 a.m. near Easton Avenue, according to police in a statement.

The suspect remains at large.

The victim -- whose age and town were not provided by police -- was treated at an area hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening, officials said.

Police said the victim was unable to provide an exact location of where the assault occurred, only saying that it happened on a street perpendicular to Easton Avenue.

A description of the suspect was limited.

Anyone with information or who may have been in the area at the time can contact the New Brunswick Police Department Detective Bureau at 732-745-5217.

The Rutgers University Police Department in the statement reminded university students, faculty and staff that police will provide escorts to vehicles, campus residences, or the university's mass transit system.

To request a security escort, contact the Rutgers Police Department's communications center at 732-932-7211.
