The suspect ran off school grounds, police said.
UPDATE: Girl fabricated story about being approached outside school, cops say
EDISON -- Police are investigating after a child reported that she was approached by a man after dismissal Tuesday outside the James Madison Intermediate School.
The district said in a statement that the child ran to safety and wasn't harmed, while she reported that the man fled school grounds.
"Please know that student safety is our priority," Superintendent Richard O'Malley said in a news release.
O'Malley also counseled parents to talk to their children about their safety: kids shouldn't talk to strangers and should talk to an adult they trust if someone approaches them or makes them feel uncomfortable, he said.

"If students see someone who does not belong on school grounds, they should tell a teacher or an adult right away," O'Malley said.
Edison Police Detective Michael Horvath, who is investigating the incident, can be reached at (732) 248-7344.
School policies dictate that visitors must enter through the front doors and report to the office with ID for a visitor's pass. Parents also need to send a signed and dated note if someone else is going to sign the student out of school.
