"When we decided to foray into social media, we decided to do it our own way," explained Capt. Glenn Skarzynski. "We wanted it to be a reflection of our department, to show that we're human. That we have senses of humor."
The captain said the Facebook posts are done by different members of the department and wouldn't say who came up with the UFO idea, but called it the work of "randomly firing neurons."
"Someone sees a picture and asks, 'how could this be used to our advantage,' '' Skarzynski said.
The captain said the department's Facebook page is coming up on 9,000 "likes" and "we're going to have to do a post on how mean the chief is."
Skarzynski said the chief won't mind because "he's used to it."
He said the idea behind the Facebook page has caught on in the community, and helped improve the relationship between the police department and residents.
"It has paid dividends," the captain said. "It has helped us solve cases. We've gotten some good tips."
