Firefighters found the individual dead at the scene, police said.
One person died in a fire Friday afternoon in an apartment complex in South Brunswick, police said.
According to a report, South Brunswick police received a call at 2:45 p.m. from a resident reporting the smell of smoke. The Kendall Park Fire Dept. responded to a 12-unit building on Deerberry Lane, it said.
Firefighters found smoke coming from one unit and quickly extinguished the flames, but found one person dead at the scene, police said.
The Middlesex County Medical Examiner has scheduled an autopsy for later Saturday.
Police said damage to the unit was "extensive."
The fire is under investigation by township police and the South Brunswick Fire Marshal and the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office and the county fire marshal.
