NEW BRUNSWICK -- Rutgers University's computer network was attacked on Thursday for the sixth time over the past three college semesters.

The Christmas Eve DDoS attack was focused on Sakai, one of university's online class portal, officials said in a statement emailed to students.

Rutgers said it has contacted law enforcement and is working to resolve the issue.

"We are continuing to monitor the status," the Office of Information Technology said in a statement. "We apologize for the inconvenience.  Thank you for your patience as we work through the issues."

A DDoS attack stands for a "denial of service" attack, where a program floods the servers with requests causing the online service to overload. While, the attacks are considered an annoyance, since no data or information is lost, users generally cannot access the websites during the attack.

Currently, the Sakai website is not loading for students.

The university has hired consulting firms and plans to spend millions this year to bolster its computer security systems.

It is not known if any of these attacks are related.
