It's an annual Christmas tradition in Edison.
EDISON -- For the fifth year in a row, a group of Edison police officers delivered nearly $1,000 worth of toys to young patients at JFK Medical Center's children's unit on Christmas Eve.
The event, organized by the Policemen's Benevolent Association, started after a few officers had personal experiences spending the holidays in the hospital with their children. What should have been a time of celebration was instead one of anxiety and frustration. Officer Sal Della Fave, the former union president, said that a few years ago, while his young son was in the hospital, they woke up on Christmas morning with toys that State Police officers had delivered.
From there, the idea came to Edison.
In 2015, Officers Lisa Katana and her daughter Mallory Katana, John Mplesakis, Scott Luks, Joe Chonka, Keith Jackson, Kevin McGotty, Mike Winters, Chuck Zundel, Nicholas Bayne, Mike Michalski, Chris Teleposky, recently retired officer Jeff Diakunczak and Della Fave participated in the continuing tradition.
