NEW BRUNSWICK -- A New Brunswick man pleaded not guilty to charges he murdered his ex-girlfriend in the parking lot of the South Brunswick industrial complex where she worked.
Giver Vasquez entered his plea Friday afternoon before Superior Court Judge Dennis Nieves during a brief hearing in connection with the fatal shooting on June 24, 2015 of Alicia Martinez.
Vasquez was indicted earlier in the week on charges of murder, stalking, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful possession of a weapon.
During the hearing, when Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Bina Desai and Vasquez's attorney, Robert Corbin were discussing the evidence the prosecutor would be turning over to the defense, Desai revealed Vasquez had confessed to fatally shooting Martinez.
Martinez was killed about 7 a.m. when she arrived for work at the company in the Prologis complex on Docks Corner Road.
Authorities said Vasquez followed her into the parking lot, opened fire on her and fled and in a borrowed car he later abandoned.
Vasquez was later traced to New Hope, Pa. where he was arrested, authorities said.
During a previous court hearing, prosecutors said Martinez and Vasquez had a "tumultuous relationship."
Vasquez is in the Middlesex County jail in lieu of $2 million bail.
