EDISON -- Despite the best efforts of Edison firefighters and farm staff, a 27-year-old horse had to be euthanized Tuesday afternoon after he fell into deep snow and suffered circulation loss.
Fire officials said Tank, a beloved resident at Petti Farm off Petti Lane in Edison, fell into the snow and was unable to get back onto its feet despite the efforts of the firefighters and staff from the farm.
Staff from the farm requested help from the firefighters around noon when Tank fell into the snow, but despite repeated attempts, including the help of a veterinarian, they were unable to stand the animal up due to his weight and the remote location of his pen, according to Fire Chief Brian Latham.
Latham said the farm's private veterinarian determined the horse should be euthanized although no bones were broken because Tank suffered severe loss of blood circulation lying on the ground for a prolonged period of time.
The Petti Farm is adjacent to Woodland Avenue Park and the Stevens Memorial Wildlife Preserve.
