He will not run for election in November. Watch video
EAST BRUNSWICK -- The new mayor of East Brunswick is a retired township educator.
Democrat Kevin McEvoy was appointed by the town council Monday night to fill the 11 months left on outgoing mayor David Stahl's term.
"I'm here to move the community forward in the direction I think we all should be going," McEvoy said in an interview, adding that he's looking to be more than just an interim.
McEvoy will not run for another term in November, he said. He said his agenda includes economic redevelopment along the Route 18 corridor, the completion of the Exit 9 project on the Turnpike -- as well as communicating information about that project with nearby residents -- and controlling taxes.
Stahl, a Republican, resigned to take a position as a judge in Woodbridge.
McEvoy was on the township school board, and resigned to take the position as mayor.
