SOUTH BRUNSWICK -- A passenger bus on Route 130 south failed to stop for traffic, hitting 10 vehicles, sending many of them off the roadway, and injuring seven people Thursday morning.

Captain James Ryan of the South Brunswick Police Department said that two of those injuries were serious. The patients were transported to area hospitals. The Monmouth Junction Fire Department had to extricate two people from their vehicles.

The crash, which occurred at 6:30 a.m. near the intersection of Friendship Road, closed the roadway southbound for two hours. Traffic delays are expected to linger through the morning commute.

No passengers were on the bus at the time, police said.

A spokesman for Suburban Transit, the bus operator, confirmed that its vehicle was involved in the accident.

"Safety is our top priority and Suburban Transit is fully cooperating with the authorities with their investigation into the incident," spokesan Sean Hughes said in an email.

Elsewhere in Middlesex County, Route 27 in North Brunswick reopened after a tree fell in the roadway.

Staff writers Brian Amaral and Sue Epstein contributed to this report.
