Willkie was defeated by incumbent Franklin Roosevelt, who took the electoral college 449 to 82 and collected 54.7 percent of the popular vote compared to Willkie's 44.8 percent.
Willkie attempted another run for the White House in 1944, but dropped out of the race before the Republican National Convention.
