NEW BRUNSWICK - Money is being raised to help offset the cost of a funeral for the family of a 21-year-old student who died on Wednesday.

As of Saturday morning, more than $4,000 of a $15,000 goal had been raised for the family of Edward Romano, a senior majoring in history and political science at Rutgers-New Brunswick.

Romano died suddenly of an apparent heart ailment at his home in Iselin.

Money is being donated through a YouCaring page set up by friends of Romano and his family.

Romano served as president of the Rutgers University Democrats, was an intern with the Middlesex County Democratic Committee and campaigned for Barbara Buono for New Jersey governor in 2013.

In political circles, he was known as a rigorous intellect, well-informed and kind.

"Ed Romano was an amazing person, and for those of us who knew him, no amount of money will make this right," states a message on the YouCaring page. "However, we hope to help ease the burden of this death from his family. Any amount helps, as we all know the expenses involved in funeral services."
