Pool and Spa News reports that prior to the 1950s, above-ground pools marketed to the public had no filtration systems and required emptying and refilling for clean water.
By the 1950s, designs had improved; pools were sturdy enough so they didn't have to be taken down for the winter and companies were shipping them with automatic filtration systems.
