The Edison resident is serving a 27-month sentence in federal prison

A lawyer convicted of defrauding four people, including two police officers has been disbarred.

Thomas G. Frey was disbarred by the disciplinary review board for the state Supreme Court on Sept. 26.

Frey, who practiced in Metuchen pleaded guilty in 2013 to conspiracy to commit extortion under fear of economic harm and wire fraud.

The 57-year-old former Edison resident falsely told his victims he would help them with a supposed IRS criminal investigation if they paid him $20,000. All four owned investment properties in Freehold Borough.

Frey, who conspired with a mortgage broker on the scheme, was sentenced to 27 months in prison in April 2015.

He is scheduled to be released from Schuylkill Federal Correctional Institution in Minersville, Pa. on July 25, 2017, according to online records.
