EAST BRUNSWICK -- A 22-year-old man was crushed to death in a cardboard compactor at a salvage yard in town Thursday, according to federal authorities.

The employee of Atlantic Sales & Salvage, who was not named, died in the recycling area of the East Brunswick facility, said Joanna Hawkins, a spokeswoman for Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The details of the accident or when the employee died was not known.

East Brunswick police and fire responded to the facility on Edgeboro Road for an industrial incident Thursday just before 11:30 a.m.

OSHA, the federal agency charged with enforcing workplace health and safety, is investigating the incident.

Calls to Universal Processing, LLC, which does business at the address as Atlantic Sales & Salvage, were not returned.
