The child won't be charged, police said.

EDISON -- A 5th-grader who told school and police officials that she was approached by a stranger outside an Edison school has now admitted she made the story up, police said.

The girl, a student at James Madison Intermediate School, said Tuesday that a man approached her after dismissal. She ran away, and he fled school grounds, she told officials.

When police investigated, however, the video didn't corroborate her account.

In a follow-up interview with district officials, the girl admitted that she was never in danger and that no man approached her, Superintendent Richard O'Malley told police.

The child won't face charges, police said.

"I want to thank the Edison Police Department and the school personnel involved in yesterday's incident for their tireless efforts to keep all students safe," O'Malley said in a prepared statement.
