SAYREVILLE -- A Monmouth County attorney has been charged with lying to police after he allegedly crashed his car in a Sayreville nightclub parking lot, then tried to blame it on a detective in the county prosecutor's office.

Mark Kentos, 45, was charged Monday with providing false reports to law enforcement, obstructing the administration of law and hindering his own apprehension, Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew Carey's office said in a news release.

Carey's office did not say which of its employees Kentos blamed for the crash, but said that the detective wasn't even at the nightclub that night.

Kentos was driving a 2006 Dodge Ram pickup when he hit the passenger side of a 2013 Subaru at 11:20 p.m. on Dec. 4, Carey's office said. Kentos told police that the detective who was driving his car had fled the scene, prosecutors said.

Reached for comment, Kentos said he is maintaining his innocence, but declined to elaborate.

"With regard to the allegations, I deny the allegations," said Kentos, who specializes in personal injury and matrimonial law.

Carey's office asked anyone with information to call Lt. Timothy Brennan of the Sayreville Police Department at (732) 727-4444, or Detective Nicholas Chiorello of the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office at (732) 745-3300.
