Two Rutgers students are charged with assaulting two people, one seriously, during a fight outside a city restaurant early Friday morning. NEW BRUNSWICK -- Two Rutgers University students were charged with assaulting two people, one seriously, during a fight outside a city restaurant early Friday morning.
Police said Michael Young, 24, from Paramus, was charged with attempted murder, along with weapons offenses and Joel Tomanelli, 23, of Hillsdale, is charged with aggravated assault.
Capt. J.T. Miller, a spokesman for the New Brunswick Police Department, said officers were called at 2 a.m. to a fight outside of the Old Bay Restaurant restaurant on Church and Neilson streets. The officers found that Pablo Mero-Cabrera, 31, of New Brunswick, had been stabbed multiple times in the head and neck and Annie Hodges, 24, of Spotswood received minor injuries from punches allegedly thrown by both Young and Tomanelli.
Miller said Mero-Cabrera was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick where he is listed in stable condition. The captain said his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening "at this time."
Miller said the "cause of the altercation between the individuals is part of the ongoing investigation, however the preliminary findings suggests alcohol and drugs were involved."
Young and Tomanelli are in custody. Tomanelli is in the Middlesex County jail in lieu of $15,000 bail.
